Winter Care Guide

by Elaine Smith-Mason
Wm Mason Violin Shop
Fredericksburg, Virginia

Your violin (viola, cello, upright bass) is a living, breathing instrument! The wood is so sensitive to the changes in humidity and temperature. Extreme weather can wreak havoc on your valuable viol and you need to make sure you feed its needs.
If you are taking your violin in and out of your home to lessons, practice & performances, the changes affect the wood drastically.

Cold, heat, excess moisture and dryness cause the wood to expand and contract and to be brittle. Here are some signs that you are not keeping the temperature and humidity at the proper levels:

Body Cracking
Pegs Slipping
Seams Separating
Bow Warping
Strings losing tension

Thankfully, the solution is neither diffcult nor expensive - you just need to stay on top of things. Get a hygrometer and check it daily (if not more)! This will show the proper level of humidity. Some cases have built in hygrometers. If your home gets dry when your heat is on, invest in a room humidifier. They are not that expensive and way worth the benefits to your fine instrument. And, on the flip side, you may need a dehumidifier in warmer weather.

A Dampit will help with dryness when you take your instrument out of the home. It fits into the f-hole and I have seen them in instruments at performances. You may consider keeping a damp sponge in a ziplock bag (poke small holes in bag) in your case when you are not playing. Always allow at least 15 minutes of acclimation time if you are going from one extreme to the other. Some players have winter and summer bridges to accomodate atmospheric changes.

With a little bit of attention and expense, you can avoid damage and costly repairs. Your instrument will better perform for you and will improve with age.
